Guilty pleas reached in burglary cases

Guilty pleas in two burglary cases resulted in guilty pleas against two men on Monday in front of Judge Maureen Skerda in the Court of Common Pleas.

Preston J. Beerbower, 22, of Warren, had been charged in September 2024 with criminal attempt – burglary, two counts of criminal mischief – damaging property, and two counts of retail theft – taking merchandise. One of the charges of criminal mischief was withdrawn Sept. 25. On Monday, Beerbower pleaded guilty to one count of retail theft and criminal attempt – criminal trespass, a class 2 felony, while the other three remaining charges were not prosecuted. Beerbower will also pay restitution to Yeti Vape and CODA Management.

Another burglary case resulted in a guilty plea, though Owen N. Smith, 28, of Grove City, Pa., did not plead guilty to any of the five felony charges against him. Smith was charged by City of Warren police on July 8 with two counts each of burglary, a class 1 felony; criminal trespass, a class 2 felony; criminal mischief, a class 3 felony, and disorderly conduct from an incident that occurred on July 8 in the City of Warren. Smith pleaded guilty to one of two criminal mischief charges, with the plea coming to a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge, and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. He will also pay restitution.

Skerda also heard arguments in a driving under the influence case involving Isak Riel, 18, of Warren. Riel had been charged Sept. 9 by Conewango Township police with two counts of DUI and six traffic offenses from an incident that occurred on July 31 in Conewango Township. Riel pleaded guilty to a charge of DUI – controlled substances, Schedule 1 – first offense and four traffic offenses. A charge of DUI – controlled substances – impaired ability – first offense, was not prosecuted.
