High school decisions coming Monday
A major decision is coming next week for the Warren County school board.
“The vote on the proposed move of high school students in Sheffield and Youngsville is scheduled for Monday evening,” said Gary Weber, superintendent of Warren County School District.
For more than a year, the district has been evaluating a proposal to close high schools in Youngsville and Sheffield, aiming to address challenges such as declining enrollment and the need to enhance educational offerings.
During a recent committee meeting on Dec. 18, community members expressed their concerns and emotions regarding the potential closures. Kim Angove emphasized the importance of community unity, stating, “We are all neighbors… Nobody is out to hurt children. Nobody is out to hurt anybody.” She highlighted that the issue extends beyond finances, touching on curriculum and enrollment challenges that impact the quality of education.
Zach Sanford criticized the district’s approach, advocating for direct conversations with stakeholders rather than relying solely on public comment periods. He expressed concerns about the lack of interactive dialogue, stating, “We ask questions, and we get answers on a spreadsheet later on.”
Dr. Patricia Mead, WCSD’s Director of Pupil Services, provided data indicating a 15% decline in overall enrollment since the 2013-2014 school year, contrasted with a 19% increase in students eligible for special education services. She noted that nearly 45% of special education teachers are now dedicated to full-time classrooms, underscoring the growing demand for specialized support amid decreasing general enrollment.
Previously, Weber said the consolidation is a “strategic step toward enhancing educational opportunities for students” that also addresses the “long-term financial sustainability of the district.”
The superintendent noted three main considerations are attached to the consolidation proposal which include academic benefits, financial considerations and facilities. Weber said the consolidation would be a major step, a more equitable access to the district’s curriculum, citing more class offerings and a diverse range of electives that would result.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Central Administrative Offices in Russell.
In addition, the board will consider actions on these items: certificated and support personnel reports; volunteer report submissions; appointment of new bus drivers; athletic and co-curricular supplemental contracts and resignations; renewal of the Veeam 3-Year Quote with All Lines Technology, totaling $91,650.
The next committee meeting is scheduled for Jan. 27 at 6 p.m., with the subsequent board meeting planned for Feb. 10. Sessions will be accessible via Zoom.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend board meetings and provide input on district initiatives. The Zoom link for virtual attendance is available on the WCSD website. For more information, visit www.wcsdpa.org.
