Mayor David Wortman delivered a heartfelt speech at Saint Joseph Catholic School during a special mass celebrating Catholic Schools Week.

He reflected on his own time as a student and the lasting impact of Catholic education.

“I’m truly blessed and honored to be here with you,” Wortman said, “As Father said, I’m an alumnus of St. Joseph’s School.”

He reminisced about starting kindergarten at the school in 1973 and graduating in 1979, more than 50 years ago. “That was before Google also,” he joked, drawing laughter from the students.

Looking around the congregation, Mayor Wortman noted the presence of the parents of his childhood friends, recalling the bonds formed at St. Joseph’s.

“I still remember all my classmates’ names–Tommy, Sean, Tammy, Ketenda, Allison, Steve, Tony, and Teddy. We had such a great time growing up, learning not only reading, writing, and arithmetic but also playing sports and singing in the choir–not as great as today’s choir.”

Mayor Wortman emphasized the importance of this year’s Catholic Schools Week theme, Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.

“What I remember the most is that. We were able to stay together growing up, and even now, we remain the greatest of friends. A lot of that had to do with growing up in Warren and having the opportunity to attend St. Joseph’s School. It really shaped me and my friends and was an experience we’ll always cherish.”

He commended the students for their hard work and dedication, thanking the teachers and staff for making St. Joseph’s a special place.

“I hope that you’ll look back later in life and say, ‘Yeah, St. Joseph’s was a great place. We had a lot of fun and an amazing experience growing up.'”

Before concluding, Mayor Wortman encouraged students to follow Jesus Christ’s teachings, calling Him “the greatest teacher.” He then read the official city proclamation, recognizing Catholic Schools Week and the vital role Catholic education plays in shaping students academically, spiritually, and as future leaders.

The proclamation honored Catholic educators’ commitment and the service they provide to students, the Church, and the community. As the event concluded, students and faculty expressed their gratitude, celebrating Catholic education’s legacy and its lasting impact on generations to come. Catholic Schools Week, observed nationwide, highlights the values of faith, knowledge, and service instilled in Catholic school students.
