The award is presented annually to volunteers. Bailey and Gustafson have been integral members of the Allegheny National Forest Chapter of the NCTA for more than a decade maintaining and promoting the North Country National Scenic Trail. Since at least 2013, the duo has been a consistent presence at workdays, special events and the annual A-100 Challenge, a demanding endurance hike spanning 100 miles through the Allegheny National Forest. Gustafson has completed the 100 miles of the Allegheny 100 hiking challenge twice and completed 75 miles one year.
“Donna and Kim have given so much of their time and energy to this chapter,” said Tina Toole, ANF Chapter representative. “Their dedication, whether it’s leading hikes, maintaining trails, or supporting events, is truly inspiring.”
Bailey has become a familiar face at the A-100 Challenge, registering hikers at the start of the event. In recent years, she has also been present at the 100-mile finish line, where she welcomes and provides food for finishers. Gustafson, a passionate hiker herself, once co-chaired the A-100 event and has helped when needed.
Gustafson adopted a section of the North Country Trail many years ago, ensuring that it remains well-maintained for hikers. With her long handsaw, she clears fallen trees and debris single-handedly, rarely requiring outside assistance. Bailey and other family members often pitch in to help.

“Kim’s determination and skill with a handsaw are impressive,” Toole said. “She keeps her section of the trail in great condition, making it a pleasure for hikers to enjoy.”
Beyond their physical contributions, Gustafson has played a role in shaping the future of hiking in the region. She has served on the Hike Committee since its inception two years ago, helping to establish hike policies, select locations and dates, and brainstorm creative new hike themes.
“Kim’s insight and ideas have been instrumental in making our hiking events successful,” Toole said. “She has a vision for engaging more people in exploring and appreciating the trail.”
In recognition of their dedication, Bailey and Gustafson were presented with engraved frames from the NCTA, along with a personalized letter from Andrea Ketchmark, NCTA executive director.
“We are incredibly grateful for Donna and Kim’s unwavering support of the North Country Trail,” said an ANF Chapter leader. “Their passion, hard work, and generosity make a lasting impact on our hiking community, and we are thrilled to honor them with this well-deserved award.”
