Whether aiming for the full 100 miles or a more moderate distance, hikers can choose their challenge and embrace the adventure on their own terms. The A-100 Challenge is designed for hikers of all experience levels, allowing participants to set their own goals.
“Out and back hikes let people go the distance they want to,” organizer Tina Toole explained. “Some will push further, while others will find their perfect challenge within a shorter trek.”
Since its inception in 2010, the event has encouraged the philosophy of “Hike your own hike.” This motto resonates with many, as completing even 25 miles can be a personal triumph.
“For some, 25 miles could be their Mount Everest,” Toole shared. “It’s about challenging yourself at your own pace.”

The trail offers a variety of terrains, including moderate uphill climbs that add to the experience without being overwhelming. Those new to long-distance hiking will find the event a supportive environment for testing their endurance.
“If you’ve never been backpacking before, this can be a great introduction,” a past participant noted. “It’s challenging, but you can always come back and try again or aim for a different distance.”
Registration for the 2025 A-100 Challenge will open on Friday, March 7, at noon and closes Friday, March 14, at noon or when capacity is reached. The challenge will take place from June 6-8, with hikers traveling south to north. The event is unsupported, meaning there are no timekeepers, aid stations, or official finish lines–each hiker sets their own goal
