Salt shortages impact local road maintenance
Many municipalities are running out of road salt, and none is available for purchase at this time of year.
With more snowfall forecasted, this could become a significant issue on county roads. Conewango Township has already had to seek additional salt resources, acquiring a truckload from Pleasant Township and Youngsville.
Municipalities enter into a state contract for road salt each year, estimating the amount they will need without knowing how severe the winter will be. As part of this agreement, townships must commit to purchasing at least 60% of their estimated amount. However, salt has a shelf life, making it challenging to balance procurement with actual needs. In years with mild winters, estimates tend to be lower, leaving municipalities unprepared when harsher conditions arise.
Despite ongoing winter weather challenges, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) remains assured of its road salt supplies.
“PennDOT is OK with salt supplies,” state Transportation Department spokesman Ron Young said Thursday morning.
However, some municipalities feel the pinch as they work to keep roads safe and navigable.
Conewango Township is now procuring more salt from Ohio to meet its needs as winter continues. Similarly, Pleasant Township has reached its maximum allotment of salt under the state contract for the season.
Every March, Pleasant Township enters into a state contract to purchase road salt for the upcoming season, committing to a specific amount from August 1 through July 31 of the following year. This process is undertaken without certainty of how severe the winter will be. Unfortunately, due to contractual obligations, Pleasant Township has been informed that no additional salt will be available until the supplier fulfills commitments to other municipalities.
To manage supplies effectively, Pleasant Township traditionally mixes salt with skid material to extend its use throughout the season. This year, the ratio may include skidding more than usual to conserve remaining salt reserves. Despite these precautions, the township remains confident in maintaining road safety. Officials urge drivers to exercise caution and stay vigilant on winter roads, emphasizing that while salt distribution is managed carefully, road conditions can still be unpredictable.
