Salvation Army support still needed

The Salvation ARmy’s Red Kettle Campaign reached nearly 95% of its goal – but Warren is one of the counties where the drive came up short.

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division raised more than $2.2 million across 28 counties during the 2024 Red Kettle Campaign, reaching nearly 95% of its $2.34 million fundraising goal. In Allegheny County alone, donations totaled approximately $502,667, surpassing 90% percent of its goal of $557,000.

“Christmas may be over, but the need for our services continues throughout the year,” said Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania. “We are filled with gratitude for the support we received during this past season of giving. Thanks to every person who donated and volunteered their time at a Red Kettle, we can continue to be a vital resource for our neighbors in need providing warm meals, rental/utility assistance and so much more for hard-working families throughout the entire calendar year.”

Traditionally running from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, this year’s campaign faced a shorter fundraising window due to a late Thanksgiving holiday. To compensate, The Salvation Army introduced digital donation options, including text-to-give, QR codes, and Virtual Red Kettles online. Additionally, an anonymous angel donor matched donations up to $5,000 in high-need communities on the Saturday before Christmas.

Despite these efforts, several communities–Bradford, Clearfield, Latrobe, Mon Valley (Donora), Steel Valley (Homestead), and Warren–saw significant declines in year-over-year contributions, highlighting the ongoing need for community support.
