Photo submitted to the Times Observer Melinda Crawford Perttu will present Scottish Fiddling Workshops for students and adults on March 14 and March 15. On March 16 she will be the featured soloist for a Warren Philharmonic concert.
The Warren Philharmonic will be sponsoring two sessions of Scottish fiddling workshops in March before a “Fiddle Festival” concert on March 16.
The workshops, hosted by the orchestra, will feature Melinda Crawford Perttu, former U.S. National Scottish Fiddling champion, as the instructor. Perttu is a professor of music at Westminster and director of the Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling at Westminster College in Wilmington, Pa. She is also the author of A Violinist’s Guide to Scottish Fiddling.
The student workshop will take place Friday, March 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Warren and is open to all string students playing at grade level three and above. A second adult workshop will be held on March 15 at the same location from 1 to 3 p.m. The adult workshop will be open again to all adult string players at grade levels three and above and to any adults who don’t play a string instrument and are interested in Scottish fiddling.
The workshops will feature an introduction to traditional Scottish ornamentation, standard technique, historical perspectives, demonstration and discussion, and application and practice of the method. Participants must arrive 15 minutes early to unpack and tune their instruments.
All students and adults need to register for the class in advance. There is a $10 fee for the workshop. The registration forms for the class have been posted on the Warren Philharmonic Facebook page. If any participant needs an email copy of the registration form, use Facebook Messenger to contact the orchestra. Reservations are requested by March 1.
The workshops will lead up to the grand finale concert entitled “Fiddle Festival” on March 16 at 4 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Warren. Perttu will be the guest soloist.
The project is made possible through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.
