Warren Philharmonic presents Fiddle Festival concert Sunday

Music lovers are in for a treat this weekend as the Warren Philharmonic, under the direction of Bryan Eckenrode, presents its Fiddle Festival concert.

The performance will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Warren.

The concert will feature a selection of music celebrating the rich traditions of Irish and Scottish folk tunes. The orchestra will perform classic pieces, including Maurice C. Whitney’s “Deirdre” Overture, C.V. Stanford’s “Irish Rhapsody No. 1,” and Leroy Anderson’s “The Bluebells of Scotland.”

The concert’s second half will showcase acclaimed fiddler Melinda Crawford Perttu, a former National Scottish Fiddling Champion and a sanctioned member of the North American Association for Scottish Fiddling.

Perttu will perform three selections, including her arrangements and compositions. These works include “Fingal’s Cave Set,” arranged for fiddle and strings, “Selkie Sisters,” featuring the traditional Scottish tunes “Breaking Morn” and “The Old Woman Would,” and “Largs,” which highlights Joanne Jenkins’ Live Oak Reel.

Melinda Crawford Perttu, an acclaimed Scottish fiddler and guest soloist, will bring her expertise and passion to the stage.

A professor of music at Westminster College, Perttu is also the director of the Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling and has taught workshops nationwide.

Tickets for the “Fiddle Festival” will be available at the door on the concert day starting at 3:15 p.m. Prices are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and free for children 11 and under. Those unable to attend in person can watch the performance live on the Warren Philharmonic YouTube channel. A streaming link will also be available on the Warren Philharmonic of Warren, PA Facebook page.

This concert is made possible through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, which is funded by Pennsylvanians and administered locally by the Arts Council of Erie, Inc.
