Six road and bridge projects in Warren County costing $23.8 million, will take place this year.
The centerpiece of the Warren County projects is Route 6, which is entering its third and final year of work that has included paving operations, traffic signal upgrades, drainage improvements, and the installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps. The upcoming phase will concentrate on the bridge that carries Route 6 over the Allegheny & Eastern Railroads in Conewango Township. Work on this bridge began last year, targeting the passing lanes for both eastbound and westbound traffic. This year, efforts will shift to the areas near and beneath the right lanes, necessitating lane restrictions in both directions. Closures began recently. Additional work slated for 2025 includes paving on each side of the bridge, updating durable pavement markings, line painting, and other minor tasks. The entire project is projected to reach completion by late June 2025.
Other projects taking place this year include:
– Route 59 Bridge. The project is to rehabilitate the bridge that carries Route 59 over Kinzua Creek in the Allegheny Reservoir in Mead Township.
The bridge is located on Route 59 (Kinzua Drive) within the Allegheny National Forest between the intersection with Route 6 and Route 321. The bridge rehabilitation project will involve structural steel repairs to the truss members, concrete repairs to the bridge piers and abutments, bearing replacements, and replacement of a navigational lighting system.
Work began in 2024 and is expected to be completed later this fall. The contractor is L.C. Whitford Company Inc. of Wellsville, N.Y. The contract cost is $6,082,432, which is to be paid entirely with federal funding.
– Route 27 Bridge. The project will replace the bridge that carries Route 27 over Matthews Run in Sugar Grove Township at a cost of $1.3 million.
– Kane Road/Cole Hill Road Bridge. Crews will replace the bridge that carries Kane Road/Cole Hill Road (Route 3014) over Brokenstraw Creek in Pittsfield Township at a cost of $2.1 million.
– Warren County bridges. Major repairs to the bridge that carries Cornish Hill Road (Route 4004) over Pine Valley Brook in Columbus Township and the bridge that carries Lottsville Niobe Road (Route 4015) over Mill Brook in Freehold Township; $1.6 million.
– Route 6 – Paving 4.73 miles of Route 6 in Freehold and Pittsfield townships. The project will cost $1.8 million.
The 2025 schedule includes awarding local project contracts later this year for work in 2026, including a 2026 LFAR project in Warren expected to cost between $1 million and $5 million, with resurfacing work on Parker
Street and Lexington Avenue in Warren. The project is funded through the Local Federal Aid Route funding and they are locally owned.
No physical work is expected to take place during the 2025 construction season. Work is expected to be finished by October 2026.
“The local network of roads, bridges, and sidewalks is as vital to the quality of life of Pennsylvania residents as the large interstates and major bridges,” said PennDOT District 1 Executive Brian McNulty during a news conference on Monday in Erie. “That’s why PennDOT partners with county governments and local municipalities to identify funding opportunities, manage design consultants, and complete construction projects.”
