Domestic incident turns into standoff in North Warren
A domestic incident turned into a standoff on State Street in Conewango Township late Thursday night before ending early Friday morning.
The Times Observer reported last week that Kyle M. Reynolds, 33, of Warren was charged with first-degree felony aggravated assault – attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causes injury with extreme indifference; second-degree felony aggravated assault – attempts to cause or causes serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon; second-degree felony strangulation – applying pressure to throat or neck; simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct on Thursday by Conewango Township police.
Reynolds was arraigned by Magisterial District Court Judge Todd Woodin, who set bail at $100,000 on Friday morning. Reynolds was unable to post bail and was taken to the county jail.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, officers responded to a physical domestic incident where EMS had also been dispatched after it was reported a woman had been assaulted. Officers spoke with the woman at a neighbor’s home, where she had gone to call 911. Officers reported seeing a large bruise and swollen left eye allegedly where Reynolds allegedly punched the woman.
During an interview with police after the incident, the woman gave a written statement alleging Reynolds punched and slapped her before allegedly pulling out a knife that he reportedly put to her neck. The woman blocked her neck with her hands, with the knife cutting the woman’s left hand.
“The victim said that the defendant threatened to kill her. She alleged that the defendant grabbed her by the throat, smashed her into the door and wall. The victim reported feeling like she was going unconscious. The victim stated she was able to run from the residence and go to a neighbor’s residence and told them to call the police,” the Affidavit of Probable Cause states.
Conewango Township police then reportedly tried to contact Reynolds in his home. He allegedly refused to answer the door, and several other officers from the Warren Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and Warren County Adult Probation arrived at the scene and set up a perimeter around the home. South State Street was closed to all traffic for more than 90 minutes, and police lights and sirens were used while loud commands were yelled as well, “all which did cause public inconvenience, annoyance and alarm,” the Affidavit of Probable Cause states.
“Multiple attempts to contact the defendant were made,” the affidavit states. “Officers did kick in a door of the residence and still got no response from the defendant. Phone contact was eventually made with the defendant. During negotiations he closed the door that was kicked in and continued to refuse to exit while officers yelled that he was under arrest and to exit.”
Reynolds eventually left the home with a cell phone and box cutter-style knife in his hand. Police said he dropped those items and was taken into custody with no use of force.
Police reportedly recovered the kitchen knife allegedly used during the incident from the bathroom sink where the woman told police it would be found. The knife was an estimated 12-inch long kitchen knife.
