Held in Hershey, Pa., the annual state-level competition drew hundreds of top-performing students from across the state, all vying for recognition in hands-on events that mirror real-world job challenges across a range of industries. SkillsUSA is a national organization that prepares students for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. The Pennsylvania State Conference brings together high school and college students from across the state for competitions designed to simulate real-life job environments, helping participants develop not only technical skills but also leadership, communication, and teamwork.
“This experience prepares them to succeed in the workplace and beyond,” said Fred Backhus, Warren County Career Center SkillsUSA advisor. “We couldn’t be prouder.”
One of WCCC’s successes came from the Entrepreneurship Team, composed of Marissa Gourley, Addyson Hannold, Gracie Tomassoni and Zerick Jackman, who earned a third place finish. The team was tasked with developing and presenting a comprehensive business plan, including marketing strategies, financial projections, and a persuasive pitch. Their presentation highlighted innovation, teamwork and business savvy.
Beyond the entrepreneurship event, WCCC students performed with excellence in multiple individual categories: In Early Childhood Education, Kylee Madigan demonstrated her expertise in lesson planning, classroom management, and child development. Her performance reflected both the rigor of the competition and the real-life challenges of early education settings. Competing in Nurse Assisting, Caroline Smyth showcased her proficiency in clinical tasks, patient communication, and safety protocols. Under pressure, she exhibited the care, precision, and professionalism essential to healthcare careers. In Power Equipment Technology, Ken Shellhouse tackled diagnostics, engine repair, and mechanical troubleshooting with precision and skill. His performance highlighted the technical training and problem-solving ability essential in the field of equipment repair.
