Warren Public Library director to retire after 15 years

After 15 years of service and a legacy of transformation at the Warren Public Library, Executive Director Kelli Knapp will retire June 6.

Knapp, a familiar and friendly face to many library patrons and community members, has been a driving force behind the library’s growth, adaptability and continued relevance in a changing world.

“It’s just time,” she shared when asked about the decision to retire. “This has been a wonderful job, and I have put my heart and soul into it, but it’s time to focus on myself. I haven’t had time for that. I’m looking forward to not having a schedule.”

Among her most significant achievements over the past decade and a half are obtaining her master’s degree in library science, leading the library through the COVID-19 shutdown and navigating a major renovation project — all while expanding services for the community.

“Providing a Teen Space was a goal of mine from day one,” Knapp said, “and we not only accomplished that, but also a long list of other improvements. I am very happy about that.”

As she prepares for a new chapter, Knapp is looking forward to a well-earned break and rediscovering long-lost hobbies.

“Peace and quiet for a while,” she said. “I did a lot of photography prior to taking the executive director position here. I recently bought a new camera and am looking forward to picking that up again. And I think I want to learn how to play the guitar.”

While she isn’t planning to leave Warren just yet, Knapp said she is taking this time to reconnect with herself and the things she loves.

“I have some hobbies that have fallen by the wayside over the last several years, and new ones that I want to learn.”

As for what she’ll miss most when she retires, Knapp said it’s the library itself.

“The atmosphere. Working in a library has such a homey feeling to it. Talking with my staff – there is always something to laugh about,” Knapp said. “Seeing the patrons’ smiling faces. It’s a great place to work.”

As her final official act, Knapp said she is encouraging community members to take part in Warren Gives on May 14, a day of giving that helps support the library’s mission.

Sara Edmiston, a Warren County native, has been chosen as Knapp’s successor.

“She has done wonderful things in other Pennsylvania libraries over the years,” Knapp said, “and we are all excited to have her leading our team.”

Though there isn’t a formal public farewell scheduled, Knapp encourages anyone who wants to stop by and say goodbye to do so before her last day.

“I’d love to see them,” Knapp said. “I want to thank everyone in the community who uses this library – you are why we are here, after all. I also want to tell those who provide financial support how very much I appreciate them. You make things happen here! We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, not a government entity. We rely on your donations. I also want to thank everyone who helped me to become the person I’ve become over the last 15 years – primarily my staff. They gave me opportunities to grow. They made me laugh – and cry. They worked with me and helped me to become a better leader and a better person. I can never thank them enough for that.”
