Sally O'Leary

Sarah Ann “Sally” O’Leary, age 82, of New Sewickley Twp., PA, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2016.

Born April 25, 1934 in Warren, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Francis and Mae Edith (Russell) O’Leary.

Sally was a member of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Cranberry Twp., PA, and a former member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sheffield, PA. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1952 and the Bryant & Stratton Business College in Buffalo, NY. She moved to Pittsburgh in 1957, working at Fuller Smith & Ross Advertising until May of 1964, when she joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and assisted in various capacities during her 32year career. Her main duties however were in Public Relations and Media Relations. She also served as baseball secretary for Pirate broadcaster Bob Prince from 19641975. In 1987 Sally helped to form the Pittsburgh Alumni Association, Inc., and since her retirement in 1996, she has continued as Alumni Liaison and as editor for their Newsletter, The Black and Gold. In this capacity she helped with appearances for the former players and produced the Alumni Letter twice a year. She had been elected to the Western Chapter and the Warren County Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame, and was the first woman to receive the Pride of the Pirates Award, and was presented the Sally O’Leary Distinguished Woman In Baseball Award by the Pittsburgh Rotary Club at the Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet in 2012.

She is survived by her nieces, Harriet Byrd of Hampstead, NC and Sharon McMillen of Sheffield, PA, and her nephews, Shawn O’Leary of Pittsburgh, PA and Dan Crowley of Spencer, NY.

In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by three sisters, Regis Crowley, Catherine Mary “Katie” O’Leary and Eloise Ann O’Leary, and three brothers, Russell, Joseph and Robert O’Leary

Friends will be received from 2 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the BoylanGlennKildoo Funeral Home & Cremation Svcs., Inc., 130 Wisconsin Ave., Cranberry Twp., PA 16066.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 4, 2016 at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, 2535 Rochester Rd., Cranberry Twp., PA 16066.

Committal Prayers will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday at St. Joseph Cemetery, 111 Mohawk Ave., Warren, PA 16365.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 746 W. Main St., Sheffield, PA 16347.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Ferdinand Church, or the Pittsburgh Pirates Alumni Association, Inc., PNC Park, 115 Federal St., Pittsburgh, PA 15212.
