Mary Elizabeth (Barheight) Young
Mary Elizabeth (Barheight) Young, 90, a lifelong resident of Clarendon, Saybrook and Sheffield, passed away peace-fully on Thursday morning, Dec. 23, 2021, at the Lutheran Home of Kane.
Mary was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Clarendon, Pa., the daughter of the late Gil-ford Edward Barheight and Jennie Theresa (Waples) Barheight.
She was a 1949 graduate of Warren High School and continued her education by attending business school. She married the love of her life, George Theodore (Ted) Young on Dec. 11, 1959 in Clarendon, Pa. Her first job, right out of school, was at the Warren County Dairy. Mary worked for the Warren County School District as cafeteria worker at Allegheny Valley in Clarendon and Sheffield Area, Jr. Sr. High School and then as a cafeteria supervisor at the Sheffield Elementary School for many years from which she retired.
She was an active member of the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sheffield. She served as a church secretary for Pastor Eliason, Pastor Cox and Pastor Blank as well financial secretary for several years. She was president of the Lutheran Womens’ Club, member of the Church Council, served as a Lutheran Brotherhood contact and attended numerous church conventions in different capacities. She was also the Superintendent of the Bethany Lutheran Sunday school, a Sunday school teacher and sang in the church choir. She was also president of Sheffield Senior Womens’ Club. In Mary’s younger years, she loved horseback riding and she enjoyed many good times with a special friend, Annie Nobles of Clarendon.
Mary was very actively involved in scouting. Her husband was a scouter and scoutmaster of Troop 35 in Sheffield. During this time, she served as troop treasurer for many years. In 1980, she received the Chief Cornplanter Council’s Presidents Award. In 1981, she attended Philmont Scout Ranch for training to become a roundtable commissioner and served in that capacity for Chief Cornplanter Council. She was instrumental in organizing one of Chief Cornplanter Council’s largest contingents to Philmont Scout Ranch. In addition, she received the Silver Beaver Award in 2001 from Chief Corplanter Council.
Left behind to cherish Mary’s memory are her son, John Young of Sheffield; her niece, Sue (Barheight) Knightlinger; and her nephew, Bill Barheight. She is further survived by her faithful dog companion, Tilly.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George Theodore (Ted) Young on June 19, 2011; one brother, Clifford (Chip) Barheight; and a niece, Peggy (Barheight) Baca.
She is also survived by many cousins.
Mary’s family will welcome family and friends on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Borden Funeral Home of Sheffield. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor David Pflieger, Chaplain of the Lutheran Home of Kane officiating. Private burial will take place the Oakland Cemetery in Warren at a future date to be determined. The wearing of face masks and social distancing is highly recommended.
