David Jordan Lutz
David Jordan Lutz, 93, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024. He was born on March 1, 1931, to the late Raymond C. and Dorothy Beal Lutz in New Castle, PA. He is survived by brothers James Lutz (Nancy) of Mount Lebanon, PA, and Thomas Lutz (Aleene) of Newburg, OR; and sister Phyllis Williams (Bruce deceased) of North Chesterfield, VA.
David was preceded in death by his first wife, Matilda “Tillie” Green, brother Joseph Lutz, daughter Margaret Shuppy, granddaughter Meredith Shuppy, grandson Stewart Godfrey, and his second wife Mildred “Midge” Hess.
He was married to Matilda Green from 1952 to 2003. They had four children Margaret Shuppy (Stephen) of New Castle, PA, Rebecca Godfrey (Gregg) of Burlington, IA, Kent Lutz of Fredericksburg, VA, and Jill Fries (Brian) of Winchester, VA.
He was lovingly known as Pap to his grandchildren Elliott Shuppy, Amelia Shuppy, Elaine Godfrey, Parker Lutz, and Braden Lutz.
David graduated from New Castle High School in 1948. He attended Edinboro State Teachers College from 1948 to 1949 and graduated from Penn State University in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry. He received a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., in 1963 and was ordained an elder in the United Methodist Church. He also received a commission as a 1st Lt. in the US Army Chaplain Corps that same year.
In 40-plus years of ministry, David served Newport UMC in Lawrence County, PA (1958); Providence UMC, Friendly, MD (1959-1963); Callensburg, West Freedom, and Perrysville, PA UMCs (1963-1965); Clarion State College Campus Ministry, Clarion, PA (1965-1968); Ingomar UMC, Ingomar, PA (1968-1976); Grace UMC, Warren, PA (1976-1986); and First UMC, Irwin, PA (1986-1998). In retirement he went on to serve churches in New Castle, New Brighton, and Beaver, PA.
In 2004, he married Mildred Hess and enjoyed creating memories and relationships with her children and their families Mark (deceased), Jeff, Kim (deceased), Scott, Doug (deceased), and Joyce.
David found joy and fulfillment in many things outside of his family and ministry, including hunting and fishing the woods and waters of Warren County, cheering on the Black and Gold teams of Pittsburgh, March Madness, and Duke basketball. He enjoyed reading about US history, especially the Civil War in Virginia. Beyond the hymns, music spoke to him. He loved listening to Country Western, Bluegrass, Gospel and the pop hits of the 70s.
Services will be held June 22, 2024 at Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church, 3319 W. Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. 15216. The family will receive visitors at the church from 1 to 3 pm followed by a service of Life and Resurrection at 3 pm.
