Thomas Rocco Scarcella
Thomas Rocco Scarcella, 79, of Warren, PA, and formerly of Sheffield, PA, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at his residence.
Tom was born May 1, 1945, in Kane, PA, the son of the late Frank and Edna (Okerwall) Scarcella. Tom was a 1963 graduate of Sheffield High School. He earned his Master of Science degree in Education from St. Bonaventure University. Tom was a teacher and guidance counselor at Beaty Junior High School for over 30 years; where he also served as the head football coach for 15 years. A highlight of his career was coaching with his friend and mentor, Toby Shea. He loved reconnecting with former players and students. Nothing brought a smile to his face quicker than hearing, “Hey Coach!” Tom also worked at Jones Chevrolet, offering the best deal around.
Tom was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the church council. Tom’s friends were like family to him. He treasured his time with friends at the Elks Club, YMCA, Dave’s gas station, and Struther’s Hose. He looked forward to his retired teacher’s breakfasts and former Sheffield classmate gatherings. Tom was especially proud of the role he played in the Warren Sports Boosters War Memorial Field Renovation Project.
Tom was his happiest in the company of family and friends. His greatest source of pride were his children and grandchildren. He was especially proud of Andy and Amy’s military service and travelled across the country and overseas visiting them at their duty stations to share milestones and special occasions. Tom was involved with the local Veteran’s Food distribution.
Tom loved trout fishing, liked bowling, and tolerated golfing for many years. He rooted for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, the Dayton Flyers, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Tom is survived by his wife Diane Jones Scarcella, whom he married on August 10, 1968; two children, Andrew Scarcella and wife Kathy of Alexandria, VA, and Amy Bennett and husband Mike of White Hall, MD; grandchildren, Mac, Maggie, and Myles Bennett, and William Scarcella; siblings-in-law, Bill (Brenda) Jones, Sally (Dan) McCue, Brent (Nancy) Jones, and Eileen (Jim) Goodling; aunts, Catherine Kraft and Maria Pellegrino; and cousins, Dan (Diana) Pellegrino, Mary Angela (Bruce) McLean, Mary Ann (Cliff) Pohl, and Andrea Schultz.
Friends will be received at Peterson-Blick Funeral Home Inc, 1003, Penna. Ave. East, Warren, PA, on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 306 Conewango Ave., Warren, PA, at 11:00am on Saturday, October 5, 2024, with the Reverend Jeffrey Ewing, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be at 3:00pm at Sheffield Cemetery.
