Eugene “Gene” R. Staiger Jr.
KANE –Eugene “Gene” R. Staiger Jr., 77 of Linda Lane in Warren and previously of Mt. Jewett, passed away Sunday (Dec. 8) at his residence. Born July 31, 1947 in Coudersport, he is the son of the late Eugene “Babe” and Dorothy Staiger. He married Nadine Holmberg, who also preceded him in death.
Gene graduated from Coudersport High School in 1965, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966-1969 and then furthered his education at Mansfield University. Gene worked for the McKean County Department of Public Welfare, where he retired as the Executive Director. Gene was a kind and loving man, and he was very active. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt. He could be frequently found at the Country Club hitting some balls with his friends. Gene enjoyed spending time with his wife at their winter residence in Lady Lake FL. Gene loved his cats, all cats not just his, which is how he ended up with some of them. He was a former member of all the following: the Kane Country Club, the McKean County Shrine Club/Roadrunners. President of the Coudersport Borough Council, Secretary of the Coudersport Area Recreation Board, President of the Coudersport Men’s Softball Association, Coudersport Jaycees, Coudersport Presbyterian Church, member and driver of the Coudersport Ambulance, the VFD of Coudersport, the Mt. Jewett Sportsman Club, the Mt. Jewett American Legion Post #574 and VFW Post #1132, the F&AM Lodge #566, and the Zem Zem Shriners among other groups.
Gene is survived by one son Devin Staiger (Jill) of Dublin, OH, a sister Mary Vanderhoef from Jacksonville FL, and one granddaughter, Madison.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Ian McCloskey.
Friends are invited to attend a viewing, which will take place at the Cummings Funeral Home on Friday (Dec. 20) from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 with Pastor Cam Mealy officiating. Burial will be in Nebo Cemetery.
