John Slaney

John Slaney, 76, of Warren, PA, passed away on January 29, 2025. He was born in Pittsburgh PA, on August 5, 1948, the son of the late John Slaney Sr. and Edna R. Slaney.

He grew up in Mckees Rocks and graduated from Montour High School in 1966, then graduated Duquesne University School of Music, and the Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music in New York City. John was also a graduate of University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist at Gaughn’s Drug Store for 17 years and later at Crone’s Drug Store until 2014.

John was the organist and choir director of First United Methodist Church for 43 years. He was organist of the Kathy Lewis Memorial Concert for 14 consecutive years. He was also organist accompanist for numerous community chorus presentations, including Handel’s Messiah. He served as a volunteer for three of the church’s youth programs (Logos, confirmation class, and Pittsburgh Project). He was an ardent fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

John is survived by his wife Sylvia (Chittester) Slaney, whom he was married to for 39 years; his two sons, David and wife Amanshe Slaney of Long Island, New York, and Mark Slaney of Warren; his grandson Bodi Slaney; and beloved nephew Jason Walters.

Friends will be received in the parlor at the First Methodist Church 200 Market Street, Warren, PA, on Tuesday, February 4, from 10am until 12 noon, at which time a funeral service will be held, with Rev. Dr. Mark Hecht, pastor, officiating.
