Edward L. “Ed” Coons, of Clymer, N.Y. and formerly of Columbus, PA, passed away on Thursday, February 27, at Corry Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was born on October 30, 1953, in Corry, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Robert L. “Bob” and Harriet “Hattie” Cornell Coons.
Ed graduated from Youngsville High School in 1971 and wrestled during his high school years. He worked for Corry Rubber about 40 years.
He grew up on his family’s 80-acre farm and helped with farming chores. His gardening continued throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, Pittsburgh Steelers, and playing poker. He loved going for rides in his Ford Mustang convertible, shopping trips and fish fries at Davidson’s Restaurant with Shirley. He loved his family and enjoyed family gatherings. He loved cheering on his children in all their sports.
In addition to his parents, Ed is preceded in death by his son: Edward L. “Lee” Coons, Jr., brother-in-law: Roger Gourley, a stepson: Michael Rater; two close cousins: Terry Haehn and Duane Bower.
Ed is survived by his two daughters: Cassandra M. “Cassi” (Bob) Brigham and Lindsay Coons (Josh Williams); his longtime companion of 37 years, Shirley Rater; grandchildren: Sierra Coons (Andrew Lee), Jack Trask, Reese Brigham (Desiree), Jon Kent and Mady Williams; two great-grandchildren: Amiyah and Kiyomi Lee; a brother: Bob (Sue) Coons; four sisters: Shirley (Doug) Sorenson, Barbara Gourley, Carol (Don) Bauer, Beverly (Dave) Spencer; Shirley’s children whom he loved: Randy (Marion) Rater, Melody (Paul) Covey, Tim and Brenda Rater, Dennis (Lori) Rater, Billy Joe (Sherry) Braswell; her grandchildren: Randy (Linn) Rater, Jr Mark (Erin) Rater, Tracy (Scott) Applebee, Jason (Elise) Covey Amy (Brett) Tasker, Leanna (Nathan) Willink, Amanda (Jason) Staples, Melissa Sanders, Jared Rater, Nicole Rater Egger, Brett Rater, Brandon Rater, Leisa Braswell, Chad (Tori) Braswell and, many great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, Inc., 316 E. 5th Street, Jamestown, N.Y. on Monday from 5-7 PM. A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM. Friends may visit from 10-11 AM. Pastor Les Utegg will officiate. Ed will be buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, PA next to his son.
