Our opinion: Plan for more Jakes Rocks success

Designation of the Trails at Jakes Rocks as the state’s Trail of the Year shows people are taking notice of what we’ve known for quite some time – we have some outstanding offerings for those serious about outdoor recreation.

It’s easy for us to forget, however, that the work isn’t done.

At Jakes Rocks there are still another 12 miles of trail to be built, according to the master plan for the trail system, at a cost of around $2 million. Last week’s Trail of the Year celebration was a golden opportunity for federal and state officials not only to celebrate what has been done, but to see the possibilities for the future.

According to Jim Decker, WCCBI president and CEO, those possibilities include providing experiences for the adaptive and handicapped mountain biking community and more amenities that include camping and potential commercial opportunities. Access roads to the trailhead and parking lot are set for improvements in 2026.

It would be easy to rest on our laurels at Jakes Rocks. After all, what’s been built is worthy of statewide recognition. But as we try to create points of difference with other counties that are also trying to remake themselves in hopes of attracting new residents and businesses, we have to realize we are in a competition. Building on our successes can only help the city of Warren and Warren County as a whole as we move forward.

Congratulations to those who have put in the work on the Jakes Rocks trails. Friday was a nice day in the spotlight to recognize the work that has been done over the years. It’s also a springboard to what the trail could be as we continue to add to it.

Starting at $2.99/week.
