Our opinion: Shining finale for Wolverines
If last week’s game was the final one on the gridiron at Sheffield High School, the Wolverines saved the best for last.
It’s no secret the team has struggled with limited numbers the past few years after restarting its own team following a cooperative agreement with Warren Area High School. Saturday’s game was the first time since 2016 that Sheffield’s football team played a team with fewer wins entering the game than Sheffield had.
Coaches and players knew there was a very real possibility that Saturday’s game with Union City would be the last time Sheffield hosted a football game – so the team sent their home field out in style with a 42-12 win.
“If this is it, what a way to go,” said Mike Barr, who coached Sheffield to three straight winless seasons from 2021-2023 after restarting from a co-op with Warren. “This one was fun. Not going to lie, I took time to take in everything today.”
We don’t know what the future holds for Sheffield and Youngsville high schools. We know what the future should hold – but the same facts have been staring us in the face for years, and Sheffield and Youngsville high schools are still here. There could be more high school football highlights in Sheffield.
But if there aren’t, then Saturday was a heck of a curtain call for Sheffield Wolverine football high atop Wolverine Mountain.
