Our opinion: Keeping county in mind

Judging from the results of last week’s election, Warren County residents would be happy to see Dave McCormick hold off incumbent U.S. Sen. Robert Casey as the final ballots are counted statewide.

McCormick received about two-thirds of the vote in Warren County. That result isn’t surprising. It tracks with the rest of the results countywide.

But the fact that McCormick dominated the vote here shouldn’t mean his work in Warren County is done. We’d argue, on the other hand, that it has really just begun.

Warren County residents may not have voted for Casey, but Casey knew where Warren County was. He’d visited here and engaged with local residents, including hosting Erin Willman of Warren for U.S. Senate testimony earlier this year. Casey was a semi-regular visitor here even in non-election years.

McCormick did visit here early in the campaign, but he knew his time and money was better spent trying to get out the vote elsewhere in the state. That was apparently a good decision for the challenger, who holds a slim 35,063 vote lead with an estimated 122,000 ballots yet to be counted after struggling to gain traction two years ago when he lost a Republican primary to Dr. Mehmet Oz.

We hope, if the results hold, that McCormick is a regular visitor to Warren County. We haven’t heard much from John Fetterman since he was elected to the Senate. And while Casey may not have been a voice most Warren County residents wanted to listen to, he was at least present here. We need McCormick to be here, too.
