Our opinion: Keeping focus on riverfront
Development of the Allegheny River in the city limits has been a hot topic over the past few years.
On Wednesday, city residents got a chance to take a look at the latest iteration of development plans and, more importantly, an opportunity to give feedback before work begins in earnest later this year.
There was a brief presentation updating the public on the details and reasonable timelines for the various phases of the development. The first area – and closest to construction – will focus on installing a boat ramp to facilitate easy access to the Allegheny River. A floating dock will also be attached to assist kayaks and provide pedestrian access via a stairway. The engineering for the first phase is nearly complete, and the city is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary permits from various regulatory agencies. It is anticipated that engineering and permitting for this project will be completed by mid-2025.
The second area of work includes improvements to the Breeze Point Landing area. A bathroom and gazebo at the point may be removed to make room for newer restrooms and additional amenities to enhance the boat ramp and dock. A third area of work
Area 3 will involve the development of a public walking trail extending eastward from the boat ramp along the Allegheny Riverfront toward Market Street Plaza while the fourth area will develop the area near the TAWC Building.
There’s been a lot of public interest about the city’s riverfront development plans. Even after the meeting Wednesdday, there is still time to make your voice heard.
