Sheffield earns wild Homecoming victory over Port Allegany

Sheffield’s Jihad Bennett had an 80-yard touchdown rush in a 22-14 win over Port Allegany on Saturday.

It’s been an exciting few days for the Sheffield Wolverines football program.

A visit from a number of former NFL players on Thursday and Friday gave way to a dramatic finish in Saturday’s Homecoming game against Port Allegany

Aujamier Slappy-Washington’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Mirahan Price with 2:18 to go ultimately lifted the Wolverines to their second victory of the season, 22-14 over the Gators.

The late-game dramatics looked as if they wouldn’t be necessary early on, as Sheffield (2-5) raced out to a 14-0 lead.

Big plays have been a theme for the Wolverine offense this season and were so again against the Gators, as Slappy-Washington connected with Caden Smead for a 67-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to put the hosts up 7-0.

In the second quarter they went to the ground for a big play, with Jihad Bennett busting loose for an 80-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

That score held until late in the third quarter, as the Sheffield defense was able to hold Port in check for much of the afternoon.

Defense led to offense for the Gators late in the third quarter, with Montgomery Tanner intercepting a pass in Sheffield territory, which led to a Noah Archer 6-yard touchdown run to get Port within eight after a failed conversion attempt.

The Gators (1-6) continued to use their defense to close the gap, as a safety made it 14-8, which was followed by a drive that was capped off by a Blaine Moses 1-yard scoring plunge that tied the game.

The point-after attempt, which would have gave Port Allegany the lead, was blocked, leading to the late dramatics from the Wolverines.

Bennett had a big day on the ground, finishing with 154 yards. Slappy-Washington was 7-of-16 passing for 128 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Smead had two catches for 70 yards and a score.

For Port Allegany, Taro Tanaka had 94 yards on 21 carries and Moses finished with 40 yards on the ground.

The Wolverines will look to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to Otto-Eldred on Friday.
