Stateline Speedway beats Mother Nature for ninth night of racing

Submitted photo Greg Oakes won the Super Late Model race at Stateline Speedway on Saturday night.

BUSTI — The New Stateline Speedway once again escaped threatening weather in the region to complete its ninth night of the 2023 season.

As the night ended it would be David Parker in the RUSH Crate Lates, David Scott in the UMP Modifieds, Tanner Ramsey in the Pro Stocks, Greg Oakes in the Super Lates, Steve Dixon in the RUSH Pro Mods, John Mease in the Challengers and Terry Mealy in the SHARP Mini Lates all securing victories.

Parker would be declared the winner of the caution-marred RUSH Crate Late Model feature that was called on lap 11 for exceeding the event’s time limit. Khole Wanzer had led the initial 10 laps until Parker would get by Wanzer as the field would cross the line on lap 11. The race would later be called after two consecutive cautions. Running order behind Parker would be Matt Sipes, Scott Gurdak, Andy Michael and Josh Ferry.

It would take Scott, the fifth-place starter, nine laps to muscle his way around race-leader Butch Southwell. Scott would cushion his lead the remaining 11 laps to capture his 16th career Stateline UMP Modified feature victory, as well as his third UMP Modified win of the season. Southwell would settle for second, Dan Sasso with another fine run finished third, Dennis Lunger was fourth and Greg Johnson rounded out the top five.

The Pro Stock main would really never get going, as the event was called on lap 6 for exceeding the time limit. If the event would have stayed green, it had all the makings of a great finish with a three-car battle taking place between top runners, Shane Applebee, former champ John Boardman and Ramsey.

Ramsey would make his winning move when it counted the most, moving around leader Shane Applebee on lap 4, just before the final caution of the race would fly from chief flagger Spanky Hall. Following Ramsey across the stripe would be Applebee, Boardman, William Reeves and Jason Black.

As we all know, Franklinville’s Oakes has proven he’s one of the biggest threats of the many Super Late Model talents in the Southern Tier. Oakes would take no time getting his sharp looking, Longhorn, Bilstein, Clements No. 22 out front in the 25-lap race. Oakes would keep just enough distance between himself and second-place runner Darrell Bossard to go on to pick up his second Stateline Super Late Model win of the season, as well as Stateline Super Late Model career win No. 9. Bossard would have to settle for the bridesmaid spot. Veteran David Scott with his best finish of the season was third. Jake Finnerty with another solid run was fourth and Bump Headman, who seems like he’s finally found the right setup, was fifth.

Dixon, who is having a dream season at Stateline, would totally dominate the 20-lap RUSH Pro Mods a-main. Dixon would be lights-out at the drop of the green, picking up his fourth Stateline RUSH Pro Mod feature win of the season. Following the Smethport native across the line would be second-place finisher Brendan Warner, in one of his best outings of 2023. Twelfth-place starter Dennis Lunger was third, as June 10 winner Zain Harvey and Chad Ramsey completed the top five.

Arguably, one of the best races of the night would be the 12-lap Challenger main event. Jamestown’s Mease would have to work hard for this one, as he would be in a dog fight with race leader Dylan Greene, as well as Andy Schumaker throughout the event. Once Mease grabbed the lead he found himself having to fend off the challenges of Franklinville’s Schumaker in the final laps. Mease would just edge out Schumaker at the checkereds, picking up his third Stateline Challenger win of 2023. Schumaker, Greene, Holden Heineman and Rick Feeley rounded out the top five.

Bradford’s Mealy would pick up his first-ever Stateline Sharp Mini Late Model feature triumph. Mealy would move around early race leader Dale Haines on lap 4, and lead the remaining eight circuits to seal the victory. Chris Whyte, Ryan Card, Jess Isadore and Kyle Coons completed the top five.
