Warren pulls off comeback against Conneaut in 5 sets
Warren’s volleyball team came back from two sets down to defeat Conneaut, 3-2, on Monday in a Region 5 match at Warren Area High School.
“We showed some mental toughness tonight,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan, whose Dragons are 6-0 in the region with the 21-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-23, 15-11 comeback victory. “We weren’t playing well at all at the beginning of both the first two sets, making a lot of unforced errors, but to our credit, we kept battling and ended up making both those sets close.
“We sort of found a rhythm in the third set and then again overcame a rough start in the fourth to pull even,” added Dolan, “and then had a mini-comeback in the fifth.
“Madelyn Nosel had some clutch plays at the net,” he said. “Summer Lucks was her reliable self in the back row, passing and making plays on defense. Lilly Newton served well and had some clutch plays at the net. Lindsay (Madigan) distributed the ball and kept all the attackers involved, delivering some nice sets to Kylie (Fehlman), Alexia (Bowers), and Maddy Jones, who all had some big kills when we needed them.”
Nosel ended with 14 kills, 7 digs, and 2 aces, and Bowers 14 kills and 4 digs. Madigan had 45 assists, 13 digs, and 5 kills, and at libero, Lucks contributed 32 digs and 5 assists. Jones added 12 kills, 6 digs, and 2 blocks, Fehlman 9 kills and 5 blocks, Newton 4 kills, 9 digs, and 2 aces, and Lilly Walker 5 digs and 2 assists.
“A great all-around team win against a very good Conneaut team, which keeps us on pace to contend for the region title next week,” said Dolan.
In a 17-25, 25-20, 10-15 junior varsity loss, Warren’s Malysia Sorensen finished with 14 digs and 4 assists; Julia Getner 4 blocks, 4 digs, and 1 kill; Lauren Fajbik 7 kills and 5 digs; Brooke Sherry 4 aces and 2 kills; Brynn Norris 10 assists and 5 digs; Attie Corey 6 kills and 2 digs; Peyton Cabisca 6 assists and 2 digs; and Paiden Johnson 3 digs, 1 kill, and 1 ace.
