Lady Dragons fend off St. Marys 51-43

Photo by Mark Evans Warren’s Alyssa Farr hit five 3-pointers in the Dragons’ 51-43 win over St. Marys on Friday at Warren Area High School.

Warren scored the first 13 points of the third quarter and held a 17-point lead before St. Marys battled back to within three points. The Lady Dragons iced the game at the line late for a 51-43 win on Friday at Warren Area High School.

“There was definitely some odd flow to the game,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “I am very proud of this group for battling and getting after it.”

Warren’s Alyssa Farr hit three 3-pointers in a 22-18 first half. The junior shooting guard bookended a Sammie Ruhlman 3-pointer with two more bombs in an early third-quarter run that saw Warren go up 35-18.

Farr finished with 15 points.

“We are a very different team without Halle (Kuzminski) in the lineup,” said LaVan of her forward out with an ankle injury. “Things change, and how we play and what we need to do. ‘Lyss’ stepped up great today, and played with confidence.”

Warren’s Peyton Wotorson grabs a rebound in the Dragons’ 51-43 win over St. Marys on Friday at Warren Area High School.

Slowly but surely, St. Marys battled back while Warren went cold. Senior Jayssa Snelick had eight points, including two of the Flying Dutch’s four 3-pointers in the third quarter. St.Marys pulled to within five points after three.

Ruhlman — who had 14 points — was 5-of-6 from the line in the fourth quarter, Alana Stuart added four points down the stretch, and Warren held St. Marys to six more points to hold on.

“We had the lead, and I wanted them to have to come out and guard us,” said LaVan, whose Dragons are 4-2 overall with their second straight win. “We wanted to limit their possessions, and the girls did a great job with it.”

Seven Dragons scored points, including Stuart’s eight and Meea Irwin’s six.

Snelick led the comeback and the Flying Dutch for the game with 20 points.

“The last few weeks we have been really battling injury and sickness,” said LaVan. “It will be nice to get them all healthy again with a little bit of a break here.”

Beginning Wednesday, Warren travels to Tampa, Fla., for three games in four days in a tournament-style format.
