For Sowa, Big 30 is about bringing people together

Warren Area High School 2024 graduate Matt Sowa will join football teammate Johnny Corbett on Team PA at the Big 30 Charities Classic on August 3 in Bradford for “one more game.

“I love football because it brings people together and teaches so many lessons,” said Sowa, the Dragons’ Defensive Player of the Year his senior season. “Football taught me how to really work hard for a goal. I spent countless hours out on a football field with teammates, friends, and even by myself just working and trying to get better. That’s what makes it special to me is how just a game can consume so much of my time and devotion and I’m excited to feel that way one more time at Big 30.”

Sowa, a wide receiver and outside linebacker who led Warren with 6.3 tackles per game in 2023, plans to work toward a nursing career in college.

“I’m most excited to just take in one more game and win one last game,” he said. “People from all over New York and Pennsylvania come to Big 30 and it means so much to be the reason that they are coming to the game. Big 30 is much more than just a game to all those people. Being able to interact with the community at the parade and inspire kids to play football when they get older, that’s what Big 30 is all about to me.”

Founded in 1974, the game has featured graduated seniors from Big 30 area schools, playing each summer with the exception of 2020 amid the pandemic. Last summer, after taking a series lead for the first time in 2022, Pennsylvania added to its lead — now 24-22-3 — with a come-from-behind 34-27 victory. The game has raised more than $2.1 million for Big 30 area charities to support individuals and families in need.

This year’s game — the 50th in the 51st year — will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Parkway Field in Bradford.

Starting at $2.99/week.
