Sheffield football falls short of second win
COUDERSPORT — Sheffield moved the ball against Coudersport on Friday, but couldn’t move it far enough to beat the Falcons in their season opener at Coudersport Area Recreational Park.
In the end, Coudy quarterback Colemen Freeman did, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the Falcons’ 26-13 District 9 Region 3 victory.
Sheffield quarterback Colby Barr scored on a 20-yard run and Hayden Holden added a 5-yard rushing score before the half, but the offense couldn’t finish for most of the night. That had something to do with the Falcons forcing four Sheffield turnovers, including three interceptions of Barr (two by Caleb Wonderly).
“We made too many mistakes; not running pass routes correctly, simple mistakes that we need to be better at,” said Sheffield coach Mike Barr, whose Wolverines are 1-2. “It was missed opportunities more than turnovers. We (moved) the ball, so did they.”
On the ground, Barr finished with 16 carries for 169 yards and a touchdown, and Holden added 69 yards rushing and a score. Barr’s longest run went for 34 yards and Holden had a 21-yard rush.
Still, dropped passes and three interceptions stopped the Sheffield passing game.
Freeman threw an interception, but he also threw two touchdown passes to Danny Vanvladricken and another to Ethan Ott.
Vanvladricken had seven catches for 118 yards while Ott grabbed four balls for 90 yards.
Vanvladricken completed a three-touchdown night with a scoring run.
Ott led the Falcons (2-2) to their sixth straight home win dating back to last season. He had 13 carries for 88 yards, totaling 178 yards rushing and receiving, respectively.
Sheffield has a bye this week and Coach Barr said it gives the Wolverines and coaching staff two weeks to “figure it out.”
The Wolverines lost 56-0 to Coudy a season ago and Barr said, despite the closer result on Friday, they should be more competitive at this point in the season.
“It’s a mindset thing,” said Coach Barr. “I talked to the Coudy coaches last night after about it… I can promise you, we will have it figured out for our last four games.”
