Another memory

In possibly the last season of Sheffield football, the Wolverines have the opportunity to go out in style.

A win at Bucktail tonight — a team Sheffield has already beaten this season — would mean they end the regular season on a two-game winning streak. At 2-4 overall, Sheffield has the chance for its first three-win season (and first two-game win streak) since 2016; the team ended that season at 3-7 with wins over Cameron County and Youngsville.

Playoffs don’t usually enter the conversation with Sheffield football — and it would be difficult with the potential roster turnover of co-op players from Abraxas, but that’s where the Class 1A team is at, in the conversation.

If you remember, the Wolverines’ 38-6 opening-day District 9 Region 3 victory over Bucktail on Wolverine Mountain was their first win in five years (2019); it was also the first win in the high school careers of any of the current Wolverines, and a highlight mentioned more than once when the team’s seniors were recognized on Saturday at what might be the last game ever at Sheffield High School. Don’t forget this could have been Sheffield’s opportunity for a fourth win and .500 season if the Wolverines’ road contest at Smethport wasn’t suspended with the score tied 0-0 in the second quarter.

There are a lot of things to remember about this season, and head coach Mike Barr wants to add at least one more memory.

“No doubt they are going to be prepared for us,” Coach Barr said of Bucktail (0-6). “They are going to do everything in their power to beat us. We need to play our game and execute like I know we can — kind of the same mentality (as last week), focus one play at a time, win that play and move to the next. We focus on the game and game only and let the chips fall where they will. And, again, make a memory.”

Winless the past three seasons, Sheffield not only broke the program’s 27-game losing streak dating back to 2019 by beating Bucktail, but the Wolverines’ 32-point margin of victory was the most since 2016.

Senior quarterback Colby Barr had two rushing touchdowns in the opener and has since added seven more on the season. Last week, Barr finished with 153 yards and three rushing scores, and he said the key was staying focused despite the emotional circumstances.

“We all know we have to keep our heads in the right moment,” said the four-year starting quarterback. “We know that it could be our last (for the school), but we are just focused and hopefully we come out with the win.

“It would be awesome to get another win and make it a moment we won’t forget. It all comes down to who wants it, and we just need to play our game.”
