9 Dragons honored on girls all-region team

After a District 10 3A runner-up finish, nearly an entire lineup of Lady Dragons have been voted Region 6 first- or second-team girls soccer all-stars.

The list starts with twin sisters Meea and Leyna Irwin, both juniors, who were also named to the Erie Times-News All-District 10 Big School Team for the second straight year.

Warren was shut out by Harbor Creek 4-0 in the D10 championship — the only time the Dragons (11-9) were shut out all season; not a surprise they hadn’t been blanked considering Meea Irwin averaged 2.8 goals per match with 54 in 19 games before the title match. She’s already Warren’s all-time leading goal scorer at 118. Meea added 22 assists this season, and Leyna had 22 goals and 21 assists.

Joining Meea (forward) and Leyna (midfield) on the region first team by a vote of the region’s coaches are junior forward Peyton Wotorson and senior defender Charlotte Keeports.

Voted to the all-region second team are sophomore goalkeeper Bella Campbell, junior midfielder Lilly Stanley, sophomore midfielder Lani Wenzel, junior defender Bailey Williams, and sophomore defender Maggie Bennett.

Keeports and Stanley were voted second-team region all-stars in 2023.

“It’s great to see a large number of girls be recognized for their high level of play this season,” said Warren coach Mark Ordiway. “Earning region all-star status is a major accomplishment. All of the girls are very deserving of this award. It’s a very hard-working group who logged a lot of minutes for us this year. Coach Teresa (Abplanalp) and I are very proud of all the girls.

“An extra congratulations to Leyna and Meea for their All-District 10 nominations,” added Ordiway. “The all-district team is loaded with talent, and Leyna and Meea have certainly proven they are among the top players in our area.”

Both Irwin sisters have aspirations to continue playing at a high level in college with Leyna already committed to Division II Edinboro. But first, only one of Warren’s nine all-star representatives will graduate this year.

“This validates the work that I have put in all year around,” said Leyna. “I am grateful for the support alongside me helping make this possible. I am blessed to learn from my coaches and trainers. I appreciate the opportunity to represent Warren. My goal is to set an example for younger players and continue to work hard overcoming obstacles.”

“Making the region and district team for soccer is an incredible achievement,” said Meea. “I appreciate the opportunity to represent Warren and be a role model to the younger players. Making these teams reflect my dedication, skill, and teamwork; ultimately showing a testament to my family and my hard work including the sacrifices made during countless practices and games. It fuels the passion for me to go even further, working through obstacles and to work harder.”
