A-C Valley holds off Wolverines 48-45

FOXBURG — A fourth-quarter rally fell short on Tuesday in the Sheffield boys basketball team’s 48-45 loss at A-C Valley.

“We had to foul with three seconds left; they missed both, and we had to launch a prayer and missed,” said Sheffield coach Jordan Copley, whose Wolverines are 0-3.

Led by Nakes Holsey’s 6 points at the start, the game was tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter. A-C Valley took a 25-20 halftime lead and upped that lead to seven points at the end of three quarters.

Holsey had eight of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter for Sheffield, falling just short.

Colby Barr and Jack Chapman added 9 points each in the loss. Joe Rapp led Ridgway with 19, but Copley said Sheffield’s wounds were mostly self-inflicted.

“I mean, just need to clean up our play,” said Copley. “Any night you have 25 turnovers, it’s going to be tough to win, and we went five of 10 from the free-throw line, which also doesn’t help.

“I said I wanted to play competitive basketball and we did that tonight,” added Copley. “The next step is to start learning how to win.”
