Coming off a successful weekend at the Commodore Perry quad meet, the Youngsville Junior High Eagles found themselves staring down back-to-back rivalry meets with Beaty and Eisenhower.
First up for the Eagles was Beaty on Tuesday. The dual occurred prior to the Alumni Night festivities where five of the 100-match winners were recognized. The Eagles and Dragons traded wins back and forth throughout the dual with Kenzie Hodak, Brantley Coleson, Brayden Patch, Tucker Sanford, Collin Havers, Johnathan Sullivan, and Ben Blauser winning for the Eagles. Mason Chapman, Wyatt Wilson, Josh Foust, Dehklund Conklin, and Eric McAlister won for the Dragons. The Eagles came away with the dual meet win by a 33-29 score.
“To me, Wyatt and Jake had the match of the night. Jake got the escape right at the end of the match to send it to OT where Wyatt came out on top,” said Youngsville coach Tim Suydan “I was also glad to see Ben get his first win. He was kinda bummed about his performance in his first-ever match over the weekend. So it was good to see him bounce back and pick up his first win.”
Next up for the Eagles was a dual with Eisenhower at Eisenhower on Thursday. The Eagles started off with a pin by Brayden Patch and a 21-10 major decision by Brantley Coleson. The Knights fired back with a pin by Lane Morrison. Kenzie Hodak began a run of Eagle victories by pinning Gabe Walter in 38 seconds. Jake Battko won by 18-2 technical fall over Owen Ash to set up a marquee match between Youngsville’s Tucker Sanford and Ike’s Thayne Gourley. In a hard fought battle, Sanford came away with the pin in 4:02. Collin Havers followed up Sanford’s pin with one of his own before Ike’s Wes Wilcox closed out the matches by pinning Youngsville’s Mack Eighmey in 46 seconds. In exhibition matches, Owen Ash pinned Brantley Coleson in 2:55, Joey Fanelli pinned Ben Blauser in 1:20, and Thomas Salapek won by 9-0 major decision over Brenton Meyers. “I was glad to see Tucker and Thayne square off. Tucker has improved a ton over the past three years and Thayne is one of those experienced, dangerous wrestlers who can and will capitalize on any opening you give him.” said Suydan, “Overall, I thought we looked better than Tuesday night. I told the kids after Tuesday’s match that we left a lot of points on the mat and they needed to be sharper. They’re steadily coming along, but we’ve still got work to do to get better.”
