Dragons post mat win over Youngsville

YOUNGSVILLE — The Warren Dragons were winners in eight of 10 contested wrestling matches Tuesday, handing the Youngsville Eagles a 58-18 setback on Alumni Night at Youngsville High School.

“I thought both teams came out and wrestled hard tonight,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “We are still wrestling a little sloppy, but I love our effort.”

Among the eight Dragon wins were six wrestlers winning by pin and two more winning via technical fall. The homestanding Eagles ended the night with two pins.

The first of those Youngsville pins came in the opening bout of the varsity match as the Eagles’ Ayden Dean squared off with Warren’s Cameron Hagg at 127 pounds. Hagg scored the first takedown and led 4-2 after a period before Dean took over in the second period and pinned his opponent to the mat at the 2:57 mark of the bout.

“I was pleased with Cameron getting his first actual varsity match, even in a loss,” said Baldensperger. “He wrestled well with a young man in Ayden Dean who has put in a lot of extra time. It was a great effort.”

Warren didn’t stay down long, rebounding with a pair of pins in the next two weight classes. At 133 pounds, Warren’s Adika Fiscus needed just 19 seconds to defeat Youngsville’s Tristan Ives, and at 139 pounds, Cameron Williams toppled Youngsville’s Michael Carnahan in 2:40.

The match was tied at 12-12 after the 145-pound bout, thanks to a pin for the Eagles’ Aiden Eger. Eger held a 3-1 lead late in the first period before lifting Warren’s Kyle Cole Nelson off the mat and sending him to his back for a pin with 19 seconds left in the opening period.

The next eight consecutive weight classes were won by the visitors.

Warren’s Carter Campbell won via technical fall over Youngsville’s Kenneth Shellhouse at 152 pounds, Ryan Letko was a winner for the Dragons at 160 with a pin of the Eagles’ Gavin Olson and Warren’s Conner Zaffino logged a second-period pin of Youngsville’s Michael Raffanelo at 172 pounds.

Sebastian Oyola helped keep the Dragons in control with a technical fall win over Youngsville’s Carsyn Branstrom at 189 pounds, Warren’s Joey Krall completed a second-period pin of the Eagles’ Connor Minnis in the 215-pound bout and Tyson Harkins was a winner for Warren after a second-period pin of Youngsville’s Graeme Minnis at 285 pounds.

“We bumped some guys up in the middle to give them some opportunities to compete,” said Baldensperger. “Joey Krall and Tyson Harkins had a couple nice victories for us tonight. We will need to be firing on all cylinders against a much-improved Union City team on Thursday.”

The final three matches of the night were all uncontested. Cole Fitzgerald and Aiden Sweet won via forfeit for Warren at 107 and 114 pounds respectively while Youngsville’s Sarah Blauser was a winner via forfeit at 121 pounds to end the night.

Youngsville honored many of its alumni, including several members of its 100 career wins club prior to Tuesday’s varsity match. Those 100-plus win wrestlers in attendance for the ceremony included Nick Lucas, T.J. Fera, the family of the late Paul Clough, Terry Lucas and 1988 119-pound PIAA champion David Fehlman.

Youngsville has a quick turnaround before wrestling against another county opponent as it visits Eisenhower on Thursday. Warren will wrestle Union City on that same night.

Sheffield Fall Just Short

Sheffield’s wrestling team won on the mat, but two forfeits were enough to give Bradford a 41-34 Allegheny Mountain League win at Sheffield Area Middle/High School.

In all, Sheffield won six of 11 matches on the mat, including pins by Zach Barnes, Joby Hilyer, Hayden Holden, Michael Knapp, and Alex Marfink.

“For the most part, we wrestled well tonight,” said Sheffield coach Tom Holden, whose Wolverines are 1-2 in dual matches and 1-1 in the Allegheny Mountain League. Bradford moves to 2-0 in league.

“Freshman Travis Childress got his first varsity win,” said Holden. “Sophomore Michael Knapp also got his first varsity win tonight.”

Zach Barnes weighed in heavy, “so he could bump all the way up to 189 and he wrestled a great match and pulled off a pin,” added Coach Holden, “and Joby Hilyer bumped up to 215 and got his second varsity win of the season. Hayden Holden (139) and Alex Marfink (152) were expected to win and they came through.

“Our 127-pounder Tyler Westrop didn’t make weight, but won that bout in an exhibition match after,” said Coach Holden. “All in all, we wrestled well. We just need to clean some things up.”
