Irwin twins compete in soccer nationals
Warren Area High School juniors Meea and Leyna Irwin are in Mesa, Ariz., to compete in the United States Youth Soccer Association (USYS) National League U19 Girls Quarterfinals.
Meea, Warren’s all-time leading goal scorer with 118 in three seasons with aspirations to play Division I college soccer, and Leyna, already committed to Division II Edinboro University, play for the Erie FC Soccer Club on the U19 Black team.
In 2024, Erie FC Soccer became the USYS Pennsylvania state champion, qualifying for USYS regionals in Charleston, W.V. There, Erie FC Soccer lost 1-0 in the final to the 2023 national runner-up.
For its success, Erie FC was awarded one of 12 bids to the USYS National League Quarterfinals beginning Friday at the Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa. Erie FC Soccer is scheduled to play three matches against Topeka SC from Kansas, TKO Premier from Michigan, and United PDX from Oregon.
Erie FC is attempting to qualify for the USYS National League Semifinals in Round Rock, Texas. The goal is to become USYS national champions in July 2025 in Orlando, Fla.
Other notable travel dates for the Irwin twins include three games in Detroit, Mich., in January; the national Jefferson Cup soccer tournament in March in Richmond, Va.; the Crossroads Showcase in April in Indianapolis, Ind.; and single league games against teams from Minneapolis, Min., and Cincinnati and Geneva, Ohio.
