Warren senior wins 3rd Region 4 XC ROY award, 9 Dragons honored
With both teams finishing undefeated as Region 4 champions, it’s no surprise Warren’s cross country teams totaled nine all-stars by a vote of the region’s coaches.
In addition to senior Sam Lindell being named a District 10 first-team all-star by the Erie Times-News, he was voted Region 4 Runner of the Year for the third straight year by coaches.
Qualifying for the PIAA meet all four years, Lindell had his best finish — 13th out of 249 individual finishers in 16:35 — to earn state medalist honors last month at Hershey Park. He was fourth individually out of 122 male finishers in a career-best 15:44 in the 3.1-mile D10 2A race in Titusville.
Having not lost a region race, Lindell was again voted a Region 4 first-team all-star, along with senior teammate Cameron Williams, another repeat on the first team. Second-team all-stars included Warren freshmen teammates Cole Fitzgerald and Leyton Salvatore.
Four Lady Dragons were voted Region 4 first-team all-stars, including sophomore Emma Peterson — also named a D10 Second Team All-Star by the Erie Times-News, sophomore Leona Hovan, junior Morgan Alexander, and senior Cassidy Britton. This is Alexander’s third straight season being voted a first-team all-star, and Britton was a second-team all-star as a junior.
Junior teammate Riley Evan was voted to the all-Region 4 second team.
“These kids had a season to remember and it’s great to be so well represented on the all-star list for both the boys and the girls,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “They did it all based on how well they raced against region runners. Morgan, Emma, Cassidy, and Leona only lost one race — to Jordan (Fox of Corry), the Region 4 runner of the year — and Riley wasn’t even in the nomination talk a year ago. Speaks a lot to how good those girls were this year and how much they have improved over the seasons.
“Sam had another dominating year and repeated as region runner of the year, going undefeated in his races,” added Dustin. “Cam finds himself in the list again this year as well after improving big-time from last year. Adding the youngsters, Leyton and Cole, is a great accomplishment as freshmen, and they are the future of that boys squad.
“I am very proud of each and every one of these kids,” he said. “They work extremely hard and are more than deserving of these accomplishments.”
For the second year in a row, Eisenhower seniors Joe Mistretta and Emily Grosch were named to the Region 4 boys’ and girls’ second teams, respectively.
