Warren’s girls basketball team trudged to a 15-14 halftime lead, but Alyssa Farr scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half and Emma Roell hit a free throw in the waning moments of the Dragons’ 39-38 non-region win on Monday at Warren Area High School.

Farr and Peyton Wotorson hit 3-pointers in Warren’s 8-2 second quarter to take a one-point lead into the break.

The Dragons overcame foul trouble, injuries and poor foul shooting to gut out the win.

“At halftime, we focused on the key things we needed to do,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons are 3-2 overall. “I talked to the girls about effort, confidence, and the desire to win. Those are things that can’t be taught and are often what the best leaders on the floor possess. Alyssa Farr was the definition of a leader today. She went out on the floor, gave 110%, and controlled the game for us.”

Farr finished with five 3-pointers, including three in the second half. She was also 3-of-4 at the line in the fourth quarter.

Farr was 4-of-6 at the line in the second half and Roell connected on the second of two foul shots to take a one-point lead with time winding down, but the rest of the Dragons combined to go 3-of-14 for the game.

“Yeah, free throws were a challenge tonight,” said Phillips. “I put a lot of weight on free throws in the first couple weeks of the season, making the girls shoot 240 before the first game so we have had plenty of time to work on our free throws. It’s something that we just need to be good at. Games that come down to things like that are the determining factor if you win or lose.”

Roell and Wotorson had eight points apiece for Warren. Maggie Lemock scored six points in LeBoeuf’s 12-7 first quarter. Lemock and Maddie Wehler had 10 points each for the Bison (1-4).

“We need to come out ready to play and do the things we work on and I stress every day — take care of the ball, box out and rebound, and play solid defense,” said Phillips. “We had some girls in foul trouble and a first-half injury we had to deal with, putting some girls on the floor that don’t see a ton of varsity time. They gave me great minutes. Super proud of those on the floor.”
