Northwestern pulls away from Lady Dragons

ALBION — Northwestern used a 16-5 fourth quarter to pull away from Warren’s girls basketball team on Saturday in a 52-34 non-region win at Northwestern Senior High School.

Northwestern’s Makayla Presser-Palmer scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth, including two of her four 3-pointers.

Presser-Palmer also had 10 points (and two 3-pointers) in the second quarter, but Warren was hanging tough, trailing 25-18 at halftime.

“Northwestern (4-0) has an incredible player in Mikayla Palmer, which is why she has 20-plus D1 schools looking at her,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons are 2-2 overall. “She can drive to the hoop, shoot the 3, and play great defense. My biggest concern was how were we going to stop her. Simple answer, we weren’t. Rather, let’s contain her as best we can, knowing she is going to score and get her points, but can we slow her down and make others on her team contribute. Peyton Wotorson had a big task today, especially the fact she is about five or six inches shorter than her. I’m incredibly proud of how hard Peyton defended her. While she was the high scorer for the game, Peyton was able to slow her down for half the game, only allowing four and two points for her in those quarters. Others stepped up, too, today and played excellent help-defense on Palmer. Emily Davidson — first game back from an injury — played very well defensively. Alyssa Farr continued to be our leader out there and handled herself well, especially when guarded by Palmer. She found the bottom of the rim and was our high-scorer today.”

Farr finished with 11 points and eight different Dragons scored points with senior starter Alana Stuart out with injury.

“(We) just couldn’t get the shots to fall late in the game,” said Phillips.

Zoe Rodgers scored eight points and Adison Cullers seven in Warren’s 26-20 junior varsity loss, earlier on Saturday.
