Warren boys win opener at DeCerbo Showcase

ALLEGANY, N.Y. — Warren’s boys basketball team drained 10 3-pointers in a 64-44 win over Wellsville (N.Y.) on Friday afternoon at the Joe DeCerbo Memorial Holiday Showcase at Allegany-Limestone Middle/High School.

Logan Crissey connected on three of those 3-pointers and had a game-high 17 points, and three other Dragons joined him scoring in double figures in the win.

Crissey and Lucas Thrift had two 3-pointers each in Warren’s 20-14 second quarter, and the Dragons led by eight points at halftime.

Thrift finished with 16 points, and Chase Sitler scored Warren’s first seven points of the game and he ended with 13. Teammate Jacob McMeans added three 3-pointers and all 11 of his points in Warren’s decisive fourth quarter.

“We overcame a slow start offensively with big second and fourth quarters,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 3-2 overall. “Our defense was much better in the second half, outscoring them 23-10 in the fourth quarter and 30-18 in the second half. A season-high 10 3s helped out with seven of them in the first half. I thought this game was very physical, so we will see how we respond with a very comparable opponent tomorrow in Olean.”

The Gators’ gym is the site of 12 games over two days, culminating on Saturday: four girls games involving eight different teams over the two days and eight boys games featuring eight teams playing twice.

Participating New York boys teams are: Olean, Allegany-Limestone, Salamanca, Cuba-Rushford and Wellsville, in addition to Bradford, Otto-Eldred and Warren.

The eight girls teams are Salamanca, Olean, Portville, Jamestown, Allegany-Limestone and Ellicottville from New York, in addition to Port Allegany and Otto-Eldred.

Formerly “the IAABO” tournament and often held at St. Bonaventure’s Reilly Center, according to the Olean Times Herald, Cattaraugus County basketball officials renamed the tournament seven years ago to honor the late Joe DeCerbo, a longtime official and youth sports coach in Olean. This is the third year since shifting to set matchups rather than a tournament format.
