Warren pins Franklin 34-30

FRANKLIN — Warren’s wrestling team grabbed a 34-30 nonregion road win over Franklin on Tuesday.

The Dragons were trailing 21-0 after four matches, but five straight wins put them up 28-21 and Warren held on, winning one more match that would be the difference.

“Call them the comeback kids,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “Cole Fitzgerald, a freshman seeing his first varsity action, received a forfeit. Next up at 114, Adian Sweet, also a freshman seeing his first varsity action, secured a takedown for 3 points and then a big pin at the 1:07 mark. … At 127, Cameron Hagg got his first varsity win via forfeit. At 133, senior captain Adika Fiscus looked awesome with a takedown, 4 near-fall points and then a pin at the 52-second mark. Next up, senior captain Cameron Williams wrestled a hard-fought match, and with 25 seconds left in the match, Cam let his opponent go and took him down in the waning seconds to secure a 4-point major decision.”

After a loss, “with the Dragons needing a pin to secure the match, Carter (Campbell) was in complete control all of the match, but going into the second period with a 14-0 lead over his opponent, the Knights took the top position, hoping Carter would just get an escape and tech fall (victory) instead of a pin,” said Baldensperger. “Carter had other plans; he caught his opponent’s head and reversed him to his back for the fall. But not to be outdone, senior captain Conner Zaffino, after being down 11-0 going into the third period, found his groove and mounted a stellar comeback, just missing a pin and finally falling 15-12.

“It was an awesome team effort tonight,” added Baldensperger, “guys making their weights to bumping around and getting it done. Very proud of our effort. We fell to them in a close match last year. The other good news is we definitely didn’t wrestle our best and we realize that.”

Ryan Letko and Blake Albaugh had junior varsity pins for Warren.
