Junior high wrestling

Youngsville’s Little Eagles and Junior High Eagles spread out across the area over the weekend. With various tournaments being held on both Saturday and Sunday, there were plenty of opportunities for competition.

On Saturday, Youngsville was represented in Edinboro, Warren and Corapolis.

In Edinboro, the Eagles competed at the Edinboro Odd Age Tournament where they had several place winners.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Collin Havers who placed first in the 13 and under 160 pound weight class. Havers posted back-to-back decision wins over returning PJW state placewinner Caleb Stafford of General McLane to win the title.

In Warren at the Tyler Stufflebeam Memorial Tournament, the Eagles placed two wrestlers in the afternoon open session.

Brantley Coleson picked up two wins, one of which was by pin, to place fourth in the 12 and under 101-108 pound weight class. Braydan Taylor had a stellar performance, going 3-1 with two pins and a 14-0 major decision to place second in the 12 and under 165-197 pound weight class.

In the morning novice session, Jared Durlin placed second in the 8 and under 53-60 pound weight class and Colt Faga was fourth in the 6 and under 45-49 pound weight class.

In Corapolis, McKenzie Hodak had a standout performance with PA West Black at the Ultimate Showdown Duals. Hodak posted a pristine 5-0 record during competition as PA West Black surged to a 2nd place finish in the Girls K-8 division. Hodak finished the day with 3 pins, a 9-1 major decision and a forfeit victory. For her efforts, Hodak was voted as the team’s most outstanding wrestler by her teammates.

On Sunday, several Eagles headed to Saegertown for the annual Saegertown Top 100 Open.

Among those competing, Johnathan Sullivan and Sam Hagg paced the Eagles with each winning a tournament title. Sullivan in particular posted two pins and a technical fall victory to claim the title for the 12 and under 200 pound weight class.

Jacob Battko wrestled his way into a fourth place finish in the junior high 112 pound weight class. Battko began his day with a 10-3 decision over Saegertown’s Lincoln Flowers, then fell to Corry’s Landon Walizer by fall in the semifinals. Battko rebounded by pinning McDowell’s Kameron McFarland to reach the consolation finals. In the consolation finals, Battko fell by 15-0 technical fall to Lake Catholic (OH) wrestler Maclain Chase.

Also wrestling for the Eagles at Saegertown were: Levi Eger, Wyatt Zimmerman, Ronnie Shellhouse, Kole Renwick, Miya Rotondelli, Angelo Rotondelli, Evan Sullivan, Kinsley Dean, Khloe Rulander, and McKenzie Hodak.

“Overall, I was glad to see so many of our junior high kids go out in search of competition this weekend.” said junior high coach Tim Suydan “I was especially glad for Braydan Taylor. He picked up his first ever win and tournament medal this weekend. Kenzie kicked some serious butt with her club team and Khloe showed some breakthrough in her first girls competition of the year. Collin decidedly beat a returning state medalist and the other boys all had some good moments of their own. That’s not to say we don’t have areas to work on, however.”

“We met some good competition this weekend,” added Little Eagles coach Rusty Hodak “We saw some shining moments while also seeing some areas to work on. Overall, the kids competed well and did what we asked of them — wrestle hard and have fun.”
