The Kinzua Youth Development Center will sponsor a “White Out Cancer” event at the wrestling match between Eisenhower and Warren on Wednesday.

Spectators from both teams are asked to dress in white and donate to support the fight against cancer.

The KYDC is providing T-shirts for members of both teams and will collect donations during the competition. All monies donated will be given to our local WGH Cancer Care Center in the name of Dean Johnson (the former Dragon coach) and Joe Letko (former Knight coach).

The varsity match is at 7 p.m. in the Joe Massa gymnasium at Warren Area High School. The match will be preceded by several junior high and elementary matches.

YOUNGSVILLE — In what was an incredibly emotional week for the Youngsville community, the junior high wrestling team offered another tantalizing glimpse of what could have been. The Eagles came out on top against Corry 46-12 and prevailed against Titusville 24-18.

There was a plentiful buffet of matches between the Eagles and the Beavers on Tuesday night.

The Eagles were led by pins from Khloe Rulander, Brenton Myers, Collin Havers, Tucker Sanford, Johnathan Sullivan, Brantley Coleson and Eric Woodin. Jacob Battko was a 7-0 winner over Feabie Fourspring, McKenzie Hodak won 8-1 over Eddie Wiswell, and Braydan

Taylor won 11-1 over Rori Schaffer.

Perhaps the feature match of the night was a rematch of last year’s PJW 12U 200-pound quarterfinal. Johnathan Sullivan held a 9-7 lead over Corry’s Brody Nickerson late in the third period, but Nickerson scored a takedown in the last five seconds to edge Sullivan 10-9.

“Score aside, it was a big ask of these kids to be mentally ready for a dual meet less than 24 hours after they were told their school would be shut down after this year,” said coach Tim Suydan “My only desire was for these kids to be in situations where they had the chance to spend as much time on that mat as possible. To make one last memory in their home gym. Their ability to stay in the moment and focused far exceeded their age. They kept their heads high and leaned on each other. No matter where they end up next year, these kids will always have this moment to look back on and be proud of.”

TITUSVILLE — The Eagles and the Rockets had a classic battle with multiple swings in momentum.

Jacob Battko led things off for the Eagles with a pin over Titusville’s Jenna Greer. Jackson Greathouse posted a come-from-behind pin over McKenzie Hodak to bring the score to 6-6. Collin Havers followed up Titusville’s pin with a 3-0 decision over Charlie Ackerman. Johnathan Sullivan won by fall over Jerrin Vroman to push the Eagles ahead 15-6. Kendon Jackson won by fall in 14 seconds over Hunter Shields to make the score 15-12. Griffin Craft added a pin over Ben Blauser to make the score 18-15 Titusville and Tucker Sanford won by 11-2 major decision over Noah Smith to push the Eagles ahead 19-18.

This meant the deciding match would be between Brenton Myers and Carter Spetz. Myers rose to the occasion and won by 15-0 technical fall in 2:01 to give the Eagles the team victory.

In extra matches, McKenzie Hodak lost by pin to Jenna Greer, Dalton Knapp won in two overtimes over Collin Havers, and Johnathan Sullivan lost by fall to Tanner Wolfkiel.

“All in all, the kids wrestled pretty well. I picked a few matchups to push specific kids. Whether they won or lost was of no consequence to me. I wanted to see how they did with someone who would push them beyond what they may be used to,” said Suydan “They didn’t waver and didn’t complain. They did their best and let things fall where they may. I was specifically proud of Collin. He had two hard matches back-to-back. He hasn’t been pushed too much in matches this year and he fought his tail off. I feel that those two matches did a lot to help prepare him for the upcoming postseason tournaments.”
