Dragons down Conneaut
Youngsville falls to Mercyhurst Prep; Eisenhower suffers road setback
LINESVILLE — Warren’s boys basketball team jumped out to a 26-12 first-half lead and held off Conneaut 46-31 for a Region 5 win on Friday at Conneaut High School.
Lucas Thrift had 8 points in Warren’s 15-8 first quarter and added 4 more by halftime, and the Dragons held the Eagles to single digits in three of four quarters.
“We held them to one double-digit quarter, so that’s outstanding work on the defensive end,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the region. “I thought we were solid on the glass again, which is always one of our keys, and we did a good job holding their leading scorers down.”
Logan Crissey led Warren with 17 points, Thrift had 12, and Leihden Wotorson added 11.
“We had some much improved possessions in the second half, 20 to 30 seconds, multiple passes resulting in layups or trips to the free-throw line,” said Berdine. “That’s one of our goals being better offensively; both more patient and unselfish.”
Conneaut is 8-6 overall and 4-2 in Region 5.

LAKERS TOO MUCH
YOUNGSVILLE — Youngsville scored the first seven points of Friday’s Region 3 showdown with Mercyhurst Prep.
Then the visiting Lakers turned it on — and on and on.
Mercyhurst Prep scored 74 points by halftime — 45 in the second quarter alone — and rolled to a decisive 94-46 win over the Eagles at Youngsville High School.
While things started great for the Eagles (10-2, 1-1 Region 3) they quickly went sour. The team’s leading scorer, sharpshooter Rylan Benton, left the game in the opening quarter and didn’t return, while junior Braydon Baker also left in the second quarter with an apparent ankle injury.
Facing a stacked deck, Youngsville was no match for the Lakers’ stifling defense and high-octane offense.
Several of Youngsville’s other players played valiantly in the defeat, including David Manning who finished with a team-best 17 points and Rodney Rowland who finished with 10 points. Manning also put on a fourth quarter shooting display, knocking down four NBA-range 3-pointers in the final quarter.
Mercyhurst Prep also won the junior varsity contest, 58-18. Hudson Haight led all scorers with 11 points.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they face Erie Prep Academy in a varsity-only game beginning at 6 p.m.
