DuBois snaps Warren boys win streak
DuBOIS — DuBois used a 13-4 third quarter to pull away from Warren’s boys basketball team in a 46-36 cross-district win Saturday at DuBois Area High School.
It was the first of three straight weeks in which the Dragons will play back-to-back Friday and Saturday games.
The loss snapped Warren’s seven-game winning streak after starting the season 1-2 with almost a completely new starting lineup from a season ago.
“We came out on the short end of a very physical game Saturday,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons fall to 8-3 overall. “We have three weeks in a row with a Saturday game due to poor weather in December and all of them are against quality opponents. We play the best 5A team in District 9, the best 3A team in District 9 and the best 2A team in District 10. We are going to get tested as each of these teams presents a different type of opponent that helps us at playoff time.”
Saturday’s physical game appeared to go one way with DuBois shooting 17 free throws before Warren went to the line for the first time. The Dragons committed nine fouls to the Beavers’ one in a 23-18 DuBois first half.
“The momentum of this game swung in the third quarter,” said Berdine. “We got outscored 13 to 4, had several turnovers that turned into easy buckets for them, and in general, some poor possessions that were way too quick against a very motivated defensive-minded opponent.”
Trailing 36-22 after three quarters, Warren’s Chase Sitler scored 8 points and Allen Eaton added a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to single-digits in the fourth quarter.
“One of the things we have been working on is trying to limit the other team’s best player,” said Berdine. “I thought we did an outstanding job today on Maddox Bennett, holding him to 9 points with 4 of those coming at the end of the game when we started pressing and scrambling for possible buckets. Unfortunately, offensively, we were not crisp today and that will need to improve as we finish the first part of the region schedule versus Corry and then go to Fort Lebeouf on Friday.”
Sitler and Leihden Wotorson led Warren with 10 points each, and freshman Thatcher Hanzely had 12 of his game-high 18 points underneath in the second half to lead DuBois (8-6).
