EC Catholic keeps Sheffield winless

SHEFFIELD — Undefeated Elk County Catholic outscored winless Sheffield in every quarter in a 62-29 Allegheny Mountain League North win Monday at Sheffield Area Middle High School.

Wil Wortman scored eight of his game-high 20 points in the Crusaders’ 14-6 first quarter, and ECC led 31-13 by halftime.

In Aaron Straub’s 1,001st career head coaching win over 45 years, Elk County Catholic improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the AML North.

Straub became the ECC girls coach in 1980 and took over the boys program beginning with the 1982-83 season. He has led the Crusaders to 26 District 9 championships — the most recent coming last season — and a state title in 2006.

“Any night against Elk County is a tough night, but the team played really well in the half-court defense,” said Sheffield coach Jordan Copley, whose Wolverines are 0-9 overall. “Colby (Barr), Nakes (Holsey) and ‘Pot Roast’ (LaShawn Williams) did a good job rebounding and not giving Elk second- and third-shot opportunities.”

Jack Chapman scored 13 points and Williams 10 for the Wolverines.

“We need to continue to get better at limiting turnovers and executing offensively,” said Copley. “Jack Chapman did a good job in transition and finishing on his breaks.”
