Minnis has best showing for Eagles
MEADVILLE — Graeme Minnis collected an eighth-place finish for the Youngsville Eagles wrestling team during the annual Tool City tournament this past weekend at Meadville Area Senior High School.
Youngsville — which placed 15th in the final team standings — had some strong outings despite the weekend’s win totals not necessarily reflecting it.
“The kids are pouring their hearts out onto the mat,” said Youngsville coach David Myers. “The results don’t justify the work they’re putting in. We as coaches are a bit frustrated for them knowing how close many of them are to a breakthrough.”
Minnis wrestled at 215 pounds and opened the tournament with a 25-second first-period pin of Meadville’s Landon Plyler. Wrestling back through the consolation rounds, Minnis ended the weekend with an eighth-place showing.
“The surprise of the night on Friday was 145-pound freshman Aiden Eger,” said Myers. “He’s a first-year wrestler and has been an exceptional discovered talent this season.”
Eger’s win came in the form of a technical fall where he earned a 19-4 win over Warren’s Ryan Letko.
Youngsville’s third win of the weekend came from sophomore Bryce Spinks, who picked up a forfeit win over Seneca’s Paul Spires at 189 pounds.
Youngsville returns to the mat Wednesday when it hosts Union City for Senior Night.
