‘Pack the Stands Night’
Corry tops Warren in unified bocce golden frame
Despite a tie-breaking loss in the golden frame, Warren’s Unified Bocce team came out a winner on Thursday at Warren Area High School.
Technically, Corry defeated the Dragons 2-1 at Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium with Warren taking the first game 6-5 and the Beavers winning the second 7-2, and the golden frame 1-0.
But Warren coach Cayla Leichtenberger called it “surreal” to look around the bleachers on “Pack the Stands Night” and realize “this wasn’t a thing six months ago,” she said.
“Our team came so far from the first practice where only one player knew what bocce even was,” she added. “I am so proud of their work ethic and dedication this season and am looking forward to advancing our program going forward.
“What a night,” said Leichtenberger. “I cannot thank the school students, staff, administration and community members enough for packing our stands for our final home match. Looking around the gym was surreal to see everyone supporting Unified Sports. Unfortunately, we didn’t walk away with the win, but I am hopeful to have a strong team next year and continue to grow the program for many years to come.”
Corry had enough for two teams in its visit, “so we played team one in game one and team two in game two,” added Leichtenberger. “We started off strong with a 3-0 lead, but Corry came back and tied it up 5-5 going into the final frame. Our team capitalized on strategy and walked away with a 6-5 win.
“We fell behind early in game two, making some great rolls, but just not enough to top team two,” she said. “Their second team had great accuracy, making it challenging to top. Corry forced the golden frame, our third of the season. They had a great roll that was tough to beat and walked away with the win. Our team had some great rolls, but just not enough to get the win.”
The Dragons also honored their three seniors on this night, Ella Getner, and sisters Lily and Sophie Walker.
