Senior Night success on mat
Warren’s wrestling team held its Senior Night on Wednesday at Warren Area High School, and it was the Dragons’ two seniors in the lineup who led the way to a 45-25 Region 3 win over visiting Conneaut.
Trailing 10-0 after two matches, Warren senior Adika Fiscus pinned his man in 33 seconds at 133 pounds. The other senior in the lineup, Cameron Williams, took a little longer, but did the same in 2:55 to give Warren the 12-10 lead it would not relinquish.
In fact, five straight wins on the mat and seven overall counting forfeits for the rout.
“Our seniors are great leaders in the room,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger, whose Dragons are 2-3 in the region. “The younger guys look up to them. We were without senior Conner Zaffino tonight; out with a sickness. Aiden (Sweet) started things off for us tonight. He’s been showing improvement in his first season, and he kept his loss, I believe, to a four-point loss which is big on the team score. Cameron Hagg gave us a great effort making it to the second period against one of their better kids. Then came our seniors — Adika made short work of his opponent, collecting the fall in the first. He’s been a solid fixture in the lineup after having his freshman year cut short with an injury. Next up, Cameron was in control of his guy up until the point he decked him. We are really fortunate to have Cam; he gives us everything he has every time.”
From there, 145-pounder Ryan Letko had the fastest pin of the year in 14 seconds.
“In one of the more exciting matches of the night, Carter Campbell took down probably their best kid to his back in the first. Mitchell Blood battled back and, after an injury timeout going into the third, Campbell took top position. “After some maneuvering, he locked up a bar arm and sealed the deal,” said Baldensperger.
Filling in for Zaffino, Colby Zinger made short work of his opponent with a fall.
“After a few forfeits and a couple losses, Cole Fitzgerald’s match was a toss-up for best match of the night,” said Baldensperger. “He took his opponent to his back in the first and the rest of the match was back and forth with both kids fighting off their backs a few times. Cole showed a lot of guts tonight. Super proud of him.”
“The kids wrestled hard tonight,” added Baldensperger. “We will need that momentum going into the Corry Duals this Saturday.”
