Several pins highlight Youngsville’s weekend
MERCER — Despite not having place winners, Youngsville had its share of highlights during the annual VFW Tournament held this past weekend at Mercer Area High School.
Kenneth Shellhouse earned a pair of victories at 152 pounds, including an opening round 12-5 decision of Avella’s Mark Adkins. After a loss in the second round, Shellhouse rebounded with a second period pin of West Branch’s Gabrielle Bambarger in the consolation bracket.
Carsyn Branstrom, Bryce Spinks and Graeme Minnis also had wins for Youngsville during the tournament. Branstrom logged a second-period pin of Avella’s Bo Allison for his victory.
Spinks, a sophomore in his first year of wrestling, logged his first career varsity pin with a third-period takedown of Ringgold’s Zayden Groves in the opening round. After a loss to the tournament’s top seed in the second round, Spinks continued to show his improvement in the consolation round and was on his way to a second victory, leading 10-2 late in the match before getting trapped with seconds left for a late pin.
The final win of the weekend came from 215-pounder Minnis who pinned Fort Cherry’s Ethan Mugaviri in 2:34.
